Test to help students adapt to the US
THE US Cultural Assessment Test will be introduced to China next year to help Chinese students in the United States adapt to American society.
US-based CollegeNET, the company that developed the test, said it would be the first standardized exam to provide a means for US colleges to "assess the readiness" of prospective foreign students to engage in US culture.
"It fills the important need for colleges to better gauge the social engagement potential of a foreign student by assessing their cultural readiness," said Celia Wagner, director of international relations for CollegeNET.
She said research had shown that success in higher education was indicated by the capacity for both academic and social engagement.
"Working closely with major campuses throughout the US, we've learned the importance of effective recruitment and assessment of international students," she said.
"An often-heard complaint is that high English language scores do not always correlate with or predict cultural understanding. Yet so much of what is taught in higher education is taught through metaphor and idiom centering around cultural and current affairs."
Last year, more than 98,000 Chinese studied in the US.
