Thallium poisoning suspect captured

A MAN in northwest China's Gansu Province has been detained for allegedly poisoning his ex-girlfriend and her eight family members with thallium.

The victims, aged from nine to 70, have recovered from taking the highly toxic chemical element, Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Fifty-one-year-old Cui Baozhu confessed he poisoned them in revenge after his ex-girlfriend Liu Jing ended their relationship at the end of 2007, the report said.

In June 2008, Liu lost her hair, felt joint pain and her legs were partly paralyzed. Symptoms were relieved after treatment so she wasn't suspicious until she was poisoned again this June, the report said.

Her daughter and boyfriend had the same symptoms this time. Doctors confirmed they had thallium poisoning and suggested they call police.

Three other family members who stayed at Liu's house were also poisoned. They all ate the same soy sauce, and thallium was detected after police analyzed the jar.

Cui confessed he twice put thallium powder in Liu's bottle of soy sauce.
