‘The Mermaid’ tops box office

Domestic sci-fi comedy “The Mermaid,” directed by Stephen Chow, topped the Chinese box office in the week ending February 14, pulling in about 1.79 billion yuan (US$274 million).

“From Vegas to Macau III,” starring Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, took 775.6 million yuan to come in at No. 2, according to yesterday’s China Film News.

It was closely followed by comedy-fantasy “The Monkey King 2,” which earned 759.6 million yuan.

All three were released on February 8, China’s New Year’s Day.

Animated comedy “Kung Fu Panda 3” took 154.1 million yuan in the same week, though it has earned more than 831.6 million yuan since its debut on January 29.
