The road to paradise is free again

A LOCAL government in north China’s Hebei Province has dropped admission fees to a scenic road less than a month after the charges were introduced.

From May 1, drivers and passengers had to pay 50 yuan (US$7.6) each to travel the road connecting a prairie area in Zhangbei County and Chongli, a venue for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, in the city of Zhangjiakou.

The Zhangbei government said the fees were to cover the cost of cleaning, infrastructure construction and maintenance to better protect the environment.

Chinese law forbids tolls for roads other than expressways, but the government said the 50 yuan was a sightseeing charge, not a toll.

The road — caoyuan tianlu, which translates as “the prairie road to paradise” — is well known online for the many stunning landscape photos taken from it.

The government, under fire since the charge was introduced, has decided to drop it from today.
