The sting in the tale of an expressway accident
FIREFIGHTERS in western China's Shaanxi Province fought thousands of angry bees at the scene of an accident inside a highway tunnel.
Several were stung as they dealt with the accident in which a truck overturned, releasing the bees from its cargo of hives, according to China Business Daily.
The truck was carrying 250 hives when it turned on its side in the tunnel - part of the Shanghai-Shaanxi state highway - about 10am on Monday.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the bees and traffic in the tunnel, which was jammed for several hours, police said. They labored for nearly five hours to clear the road and remove the truck.
The driver was slightly injured. Police claim the truck was traveling too fast.
Witnesses said they heard repeated cries of pain as firefighters were stung by bees. Thousands of vehicles were delayed in the tunnel as firefighters dodged bees in their efforts to remove the truck.
Most were stung on their hands, the only part of the body not protected by uniforms, according to witnesses.
Police have not yet said whether the truck driver would be facing prosecution.
