Thieves using realistic silica masks to bamboozle police

THEFTS using realistic, silica gel human “skin masks” are on the rise according to police, Beijing Morning News reported today.

The masks bear a close resemblance to a human face, with shadings, wrinkles and other characteristics of human skin. It takes only seconds to disguise a 20-something person as a 40-year-old, the report said.

The masks are readily available online and suspects told police a mask costs only about 800 yuan (US$131.28).

Police in eastern Anhui Province recently caught two suspects who stand accused of committing more than 20 thefts in the province using the skin masks.

In February, police had great difficulty capturing a suspect who had stolen jewelry worth millions of yuan in southern Guangdong province and escaped wearing a skin mask.

A theft at an ATM using skin masks was reported in eastern Jiangsu Province.

Police suggested regulations and laws on such skin masks should be tightened — sales of the masks are perfectly legal according to current laws.
