Thieves who stole cop's pistol hunted

ARMED police troops and SWAT officers were hunting three men who allegedly stole a moped in eastern China's Anhui Province after two of them stole a patrol officer's loaded pistol during the chase on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tongcheng City public security bureau has posted a 10,000-yuan (US$1,460) reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects, China National Radio reported yesterday.

Police were stopping all vehicles entering and leaving Tongcheng.

The three are all aged about 30 and 175 centimeters tall, the report said. One wore a black overcoat while another was in yellow. The one who rode away on the stolen moped wore a violet top.

The three suspects were seen stealing the moped at about 4pm when an old woman raised the alarm, the report said.

Two patrol officers in the vicinity gave chase immediately and fired a warning shot in the air.

One man rode off on the moped while the other two fled in another direction on foot, forcing the officers to split up. The officer who chased the two who ran off was knocked down by them and had his pistol stolen in the struggle.

All the three suspects escaped despite the arrival of more police.

Meanwhile, police in Chongqing Municipality are still searching for the man who shot a soldier standing sentry outside an army garrison on March 19 and promised a reward of 600,000 yuan for information.

Posters featuring images of the suspect were distributed in Chongqing. The pictures show an average-sized man wearing a long-sleeved white top, dark trousers and a grey balaclava, carrying a white plastic bag in which he carried the automatic rifle he stole from the dead sentry.
