Think twice before eating at roadside stalls

HEALTH authorities in east China have warned barbecue lovers of excessive use of meat tenderizer powder by many venders to give spoiled meat a fresh and delicious look.

The "magic white powder," as many food sellers called it in Nanjing and Qingdao, consists mainly of sodium nitrite, a chemical compound that can stabilize the red color of fish and meat and prevent growth of bacteria.

However, excessive use of sodium nitrite can lead to poisoning and cancer in the long run, today's Yangtze Evening News quoted health authorities as saying.

Depsite its health hazard, many food stalls still deem it as the best choice to cut cost. The price for a bag of 250 grams of tenderizer ranges from 4 yuan (US$60 cents) to 25 yuan depending on the brand and quality, the newspaper said.

One wholesaler, who had ran food additives business for seven years, told reporters that the tenderizer powder was the best seller in her shop and customers ranged from big coffee shop chains to local barbecue vendors.
