Thirsty villager leads to sacking of town boss

A CENTRAL China town's head has been fired after ordering the detention of a villager who mistakenly took his cup of water to drink.

Jiang Youjun, director of Chengjiao Town in Suixian County of Henan Province's Shangqiu City, was too rude in dealing with the dispute and went beyond his duty to order the detention, the county government told today's Beijing News.

Villager Wei Kexing, 65, approached Jiang for land compensation last Monday. He took Jiang's cup of water from his desk because he was thirsty, but Jiang became angry and a fight followed.

Jiang then called police and ordered them to detain Wei for seven days. Media reports of the incident roused fierce public outcry.

After investigation, the county government sacked Jiang and also ordered the public security bureau to remove Zhang Yuhui from his post as director of Jiaocheng Town's Police Office.

Wei has been released and Jiang has visited Wei's wife to express his apology, according to the county government.
