Thousand rally in hospital over boy's death
TWO senior officials of a hospital in eastern Jiangsu Province have been suspended from their duties after more than 1,000 people gathered in the hospital on Sunday to mourn the death of a five-year-old boy who died after receiving infusion.
Authorities of the Zhangjiagang No. 1 People's Hospital said the mixture of metoclopramide hydrochloride and sodium bicarbonate in the boy's infusion might have caused his sudden deterioration and ensuing death on November 28, Xinhua reported today.
But the hospital denied any wrongdoing in the medical practice of its doctors and defended its application of the infusion as no previous records showed the mixture could lead to a problem, the report said.
However, it made an announcement yesterday to temporarily remove a deputy director of the hospital and the chief of pediatrics department from their jobs. A pediatrician and a pharmacist who treated the boy were also suspended from medical practice.
The boy, Xia Chengsen, was sent to the hospital for continuous vomiting at 9:30pm on November 28. A pediatrician named Wu Yan said the boy had caught a cold and prescribed a drip for him. However, Xia felt severe bellyache and lost consciousness during the infusion.
The boy was pronounced dead after treatment failed, the report said.
The boy's relatives and more than 1,000 others who learned the tragedy via the Internet gathered at the hospital to show their grievance. Some people even threw stones at the hospital's windows but this was not confirmed by the authorities.
