Thousands affected by heavy rain in northeast
STORMS across northeast China since Wednesday have inundated parts of Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, blocking roads and cutting communication networks to about 1,100 households.
In Jilin’s Yongji County, where heavy downpours last week left 18 people dead and 18 others missing, rain on Wednesday evening flooded the county seat.
The rain has been so heavy that vehicles were submerged, witnesses said.
Local authorities began relocating residents on Wednesday afternoon.
The city of Jilin is in an area prone to mountain torrents and flooding.
Last week, more than 110,000 people had to relocated as rain battered the city. A 32,360-strong search and rescue team has been deployed to clear sludge and debris, repair bridges, and reconnect households to telecommunications and electricity networks.
“My shop was again hit, with sludge damaging all my supplies. I had only just cleaned up from the flooding last week,” said Zhang Hua, a shop owner in Yongji.
Meanwhile, in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, more than 1,100 households in a forested area of Shangzhi are without communication networks. The rain since Wednesday afternoon has damaged roads and other facilities.
Local authorities have sent a number of rescue teams to try to reach the area, along with disaster relief goods including clothes and quilts.
China’s national weather observatory issued a yellow alert for rainstorms yesterday, with heavy rain expected in most of north China and some areas in the south over the next 24 hours.
Today, heavy rain is expected in parts of Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Guangdong and Yunnan, according to the National Meteorological Center.
Precipitation will reach up to 180 millimeters in central Jilin, southeast Heilongjiang and northern Liaoning, and some of these areas may see thunderstorms and gales, the center said.
It warned local authorities to reduce outdoor activities and take precautions against strong winds, flooding and geological disasters.
