Thousands at work to clear snow
More than 50,000 people were mobilized to clear snow in Harbin, capital of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, yesterday after the city’s worst snowstorm in more than 50 years.
Since Saturday, Harbin has seen an average daily snowfall of 11.4 millimeters, the highest level since daily records began in 1961, the city’s weather forecasters said.
Residents, police and volunteers helped to clear snow and ice from the streets, and special snow clearing machines and vehicles had also been pressed into action, city government officials said.
Education authorities had told all kindergartens, primary and high schools in the urban area to close after snow on streets had exceeded 10 centimeters in some areas.
Yesterday, the National Meteorological Center issued a blue alert for snowstorms, forecasting continuous snow in the eastern part of Heilongjiang over the following 24 hours.
Snowfall was expected to reach 10 to 14mm by 8am this morning.
Neighboring Jilin Province will continue to see heavy snowfalls throughout today.
Snow in the central and eastern part of Jilin was up to 65cm deep yesterday morning.
Although the snow had stopped falling in northeast Liaoning Province yesterday, temporary traffic controls remained in place, while some road sections were closed.
In Shenyang, Liaoning’s capital, Xiantao International Airport, which had been closed at 7pm on Monday, resumed services yesterday morning. But the heavy snow led to many flights being delayed and 96 canceled.
