Thousands held accountable for pollution
LAST year, 720 people were detained and 6,454 held accountable for environment-related offenses in China, according to information disclosed at a national environment work conference.
Through public tip-offs and random checks, inspectors looked into 33,000 cases and imposed fines totaling 440 million yuan (US$63.6 million) after central government inspections in several provinces and municipalities, including Shanghai and Beijing.
Also last year, the government rejected 11 high-pollution and high-energy-consuming projects, involving a total investment of 97 billion yuan, and 4.05 million polluting vehicles were taken off the roads.
