Thousands stranded as Typhoon Utor approaches
Transport services in south China’s Hainan and Guangdong provinces have been disrupted due to the approach of Typhoon Utor, which is expected to make landfall this afternoon.
More than 1,900 passengers are stranded at the Sanya Phoenix International Airport due to the cancellation of 28 flights. At the Haikou Meilan International Airport, 26 flights have been canceled, affecting more than 1,200 passengers.
Bullet train services on Hainan’s east coast have been suspended.
Flood control authorities in Hainan have ordered evacuation of residents from areas which may be badly affected by the storm’s arrival.
Shipping services on the Qiongzhou Strait have been closed and trains that were due to pass through the area have been suspended since 7am yesterday.
Some 500 personnel have been mobilized to inspect ports, highways, banks, tunnels and bridges, as well as make flood control preparations.
The weather bureau in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which borders Guangdong, initiated an emergency response for Utor.
The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said waves up to 10 meters high are expected in the northern part of the South China Sea today.
Those who had planned to travel to affected areas should stay home and coastal authorities should take precautionary measures, the center said.
