Three extras drown during filming

THREE television extras, including two middle school students, drowned while wading across a river for a battle scene being filmed in southwestern China.

More than 60 part-time actors were wading the 70-meter wide Enyang River when several lost their balance and fell into the water at Bazhong City, Sichuan Province, on Tuesday, reported Chengdu Business Daily today.

The dead teenagers were named as Zhang Ke, 15, and Feng Zhichao, 17. Neither their parents nor schools knew that they were working as extras, paid between 20 yuan (US$2.90) and 40 yuan a day.

The other 22-year-old victim was from Shandong Province, according to the report.

More than 200 rescuers, including local fishermen, retrieved the bodies yesterday.

The local Safety Supervision Bureau blamed the drama team for the accidents, saying the crew had no emergency plan to cope with dangerous scenes like wading a river. The report said the director and producer could not be reached for comment.
