Three killed in another Chengdu bus crash

THREE people were killed and eight others were seriously injured after a bus collided with a van in southwestern China this morning.

The accident at 10:20am was the 13th traffic accident involving a bus in Chengdu in the past two months, raising the death toll from bus crashes from five to eight.

The three killed were standing at the bus stop when the bus lost control, smashed into the van and hit the bus stop. Seven passengers on the bus and one in the van were injured. All the injured are being treated in hospital.

Four days earlier three buses collided in the city, squeezing a young man to death. The accidents have raised public concern over bus safety in Chengdu.

Driving while tired has been cited as the main cause of the frequent bus accidents. Bus drivers say they have to drive more than 10 hours a day, according to China Radio International.

The Chengdu bus group has started to recruit new drivers in the hope of solving the problem.
