Three officials get jail terms over taking bribes
THREE former government officials in the southern city of Guangzhou received jail terms ranging from six to 14 years yesterday as the verdicts of 15 bribery and forced trading cases were announced.
Wang Baolin, a former law enforcement squad chief with the Baiyun District Urban Management Bureau in Guangzhou, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for having 11.065 million yuan (US$1.77 million) in cash earned illegally and 15,833 yuan worth of gold, Yangcheng Evening News reported.
He took bribes worth 4.17 million yuan in cash and 500 grams in gold and was unable to explain how he obtained 6.895 million yuan, the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court said, according to the report.
Several bank accounts showed Wang had raised 20.72 million yuan, including his legal income, between July 2009 and December 2011. The illicit money was recovered and assets worth 400,000 yuan were confiscated, it said.
Li Bin, former vehicle management chief with the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, was sentenced to 11 years for receiving 3.4 million yuan in bribes from 2008 through March 2012. In return, he turned a blind eye to the violations of a vehicle-testing company that used outdated facilities, the court said.
He later surrendered to police and handed over his illicit gains, including a luxurious watch and a sedan. The court also ordered Li to pay 200,000 yuan, but gave him a lenient sentence because he cooperated with authorities, the report said.
Xie Zuozhang, former deputy head of the Guangzhou Forestry Bureau, was sentenced to six years for accepting 800,000 yuan in bribes between 2004 and 2008, the paper said.
He took bribes in return for helping others get promotions or government allowances, the court said. The illicit money was recovered.
Several district and county-level courts in Guangzhou also issued verdicts against corrupt officials yesterday.
