Thug-hiring prof stripped of duties
A MEDICAL school professor has been suspended from his duties as a teacher and doctor after being held by police on suspicion of hiring thugs to attack two science-fraud busters.
The Huazhong University of Science and Technology has released the decision against Xiao Chuanguo, a professor of its school of medicine and head of the urology division of the Wuhan Union Hospital affiliated with the university.
Xiao is under police investigation in Beijing, where the assaults on "science cop" Fang Zhouzi and his ally Fang Xuanchang took place.
Fang Zhouzi is a campaigner against academic and scientific fraud. Fang Xuanchang, a financial journal editor, closely collaborated with him.
The duo strongly doubted Xiao's claims of surgical breakthroughs. They had been arguing with Xiao about the matter, with several lawsuits flying back and forth, since 2005.
Xiao blamed the exposure of his alleged academic frauds for costing him a chance to gain membership to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. Xiao also accused the two Fangs of instigating mass tort litigation by patients over his alleged medical malpractice.
According to news reports, Xiao has confessed to police that he spent 100,000 yuan (US$14,800), using a relative as a middleman, to hire two hitmen to attack the two.
Fang escaped a sneak attack on his way home on August 29 with only some bruises. But the journalist had his skull bashed on the night of June 24.
