Thunder blamed for girl's death
A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl in neighboring Zhejiang Province died in hospital after lightning struck her house on Saturday afternoon.
The girl, staying with her grandparents in Hangzhou, Zhejiang's capital city, was lying in bed with her grandmother at about 1pm when a thunderstorm hit the city.
Her grandmother told Hangzhou-based Metropolis Express newspaper that she saw a flash and felt a jolt of electricity. The girl, who was in her arms, passed out and was sent to hospital. A doctor told the paper the girl's heart had stopped.
The cause of the girl's death remains unclear but an expert at Zhejiang's Thunder Prevention Center said a sound wave caused by the thunderclap could have stopped the girl's heart.
