Tibet to invest in school showers
More than 100 shower blocks will be built in schools in the Tibet Autonomous Region by the end of this year to improve students’ personal hygiene, officials said.
Finding a place to take a shower after playing basketball used to be a headache for Ngawang Yulgyel, a student from Ngari Prefecture. But that will be a thing of the past when his middle school started building new facilities in June.
“Thanks to the new shower block in our school, warm water is just a tap away,” Ngawang Yulgyel said.
For a long time, the lack of showers at schools in remote and impoverished areas of the autonomous region has posed health hazards for students.
An initiative launched last year is addressing the problem by the simple expedient of building shower blocks in primary and middle schools across the region in the next three to five years, according to Lu Mingxiu, an official with the regional department of finance. All the washrooms will have solar power water heaters to make the most of the rich sunlight.
By the end of June, the department of finance had earmarked 62 million yuan (US$10.1 million) for construction of 71 such facilities. It will also invest another 30 million yuan in the second half this year to build 38 more.
“In addition to improving kids’ personal hygiene, taking a shower will also make them feel refreshed,” said Namgyal Drolkar, a local teacher.
