Ticketless child case prompts a warning

LOOPHOLES that allowed a child to board a Beijing-Shanghai flight without a ticket need to be eliminated, a civil aviation authority official warned yesterday.
Li Jicheng, a deputy director with the Civil Aviation Administration of China, urged all relevant authorities to “watch over every checkpoint” and ensure safety regulations are observed.
Before Sunday’s flight was due to take off, it was found the child had no boarding card.
Five people, including the child, were taken off the flight while all other passengers had to go through security checks for a second time.
The flight eventually took off around noon, after a delay of around five hours.
Police at Beijing Capital International Airport released the five after it was determined there had been no intention to avoid buying a ticket, Li told a press conference in the capital.
The group were flying for the first time and had assumed the 4-year-old could travel free, he said.
They were also not wholly to blame for the delay, he added.
Bad weather already meant a delay of over three hours, while the incident only added another 90 minutes.
Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines apologized to passengers and promised to review its boarding procedures.
It said it would be compensating passengers for the delay.
The airline reminded passengers that all children need a ticket, even if they do not occupy a seat.
