Tiger attack: Man dies, son safe
FIVE tigers mauled a man to death in an attack at a wildlife park in northwest China, police and park officials said yesterday.
The man, 45, and his son, 17, entered the big cats' enclosure after gates were left opened on Sunday afternoon. Miraculously, the teenager escaped with minor injuries.
The survivor, surnamed Zhang, said they passed two gates, both opened, to enter the enclosure. Zhang was accompanied by his father on the visit after completing the national college entrance exams.
The father was bitten about the head and neck and lying in a pool of blood when rescuers reached him at the Qingling Wildlife Park in the Shaanxi provincial capital of Xi'an.
His son was surrounded by two or three tigers ready toattack, said a park spokes-man, Jiao Congling.
Zookeepers drove two vehicles to disperse the tigers.
The father was certified as dead by medical staff.
"The rescue effort lasted about 10 minutes," said park general engineer Shen Guancheng.
Local police have begun inquiries. A preliminary investigation revealed that a park worker failed to properly close gates leading to the enclosure and the pair simply walked right in, Xi'an police spokesman Li Yanrong said.
The staff member responsible had been detained for questioning, Li said.
Park officials said when the two, from Shaanxi's Heyang County, entered the enclosure five among nearly 50 tigers in captivity were nearby.
However, a witness said the two entered the enclosure by following a sightseeing bus.
Jiao said warning signs were on both enclosure gates and admission tickets.
