Tiger kills zookeeper who entered cage alone

A zookeeper at Chuntai Park in Yichun, in east China’s Jiangxi Province, was killed by a tiger yesterday.
The victim, surnamed Gong, was attacked while cleaning the animal’s cage, according to local media reports citing police. Gong, 29, was said to have entered the tiger’s cage alone around 8am and shortly thereafter was heard screaming by another keeper surnamed Zeng and a zoo contractor. After rushing to Gong’s aid, Zeng drove the tiger away. Doctors rushed to the scene but were unable to save Gong, who died around 9:20am, police say.
Authorities are reportedly investigating the incident.
Gong began taking care of tigers when he was 16 years old and raised the tiger that killed him from its birth, thepaper.cn reported.
The director of Yichun’s bureau of parks and woods, surnamed Lin, said the tiger may have attacked Gong because it was in estrus, according to the website.
China has seen a number of tiger-related deaths at local zoos over recent years.
In 2013, a 57-year-old keeper was killed by a tiger at Shanghai Zoo. A 53-year-old keeper was killed by a tiger at the same zoo in 2010.
