Tiger shot dead after escaping zoo cage
A 9-year-old female Manchurian tiger that escaped from its cage in a zoo in the city of Wuhu in Anhui Province was shot dead by a SWAT trouper yesterday as it was staring at visitors.
The tiger broke loose when a zookeeper opened the cage to feed it at 4:20pm yesterday. Visitors were warned and led to safe places by about 20 policemen after receiving a report from the zoo inside the Zheshan Park. No one was injured in the incident, Xin'an Evening News reported today.
The tiger became irritable and restless because it was in heat, the paper said.
A SWAT team was called in to handle the dangerous animal. "The tiger was so scared and provoked by visitors. We feared it would hurt people, so we shot it," an officer said.
