Time spent on Internet set to increase
The amount of time Chinese people spend online is expected to rise to 202 minutes a day by 2017, from an average of 142 minutes last year, a poll has said.
Due to the rising popularity of tablets and smartphones, mobile devices are this year set to overtake desktop and laptop computers as the primary conduit for accessing the Internet, the study by media agency ZenithOptimedia claimed.
Also, as more and more people access online video streaming websites, the average amount of time Chinese people spend watching television each day is set to fall to 125 minutes in 2017, from 139 minutes last year, the survey said.
Meanwhile, the amount of time people spend reading newspapers is set to drop to less than 12 minutes a day — from 14 minutes last year — while time spent reading magazines will fall 30 percent from 2014 to under three minutes, it said.
Globally, people are expected to spend 492 minutes per day “consuming media” in 2017, up from 485 minutes last year.
The Internet is the fastest growing sector, with an annual expansion rate of about 12 percent, but television is still the most popular medium worldwide, with the average viewer spending 184 minutes a day in front of one.
“The average person already spends half their waking life consuming media and they’re hungry for more,” ZenithOptimedia’s Jonathan Barnard said in a statement.
“We expect media consumption to keep growing for the foreseeable future,” he said.
