Tip of baby’s finger cut off during C-section delivery

A HOSPITAL paid 100,000 yuan (US$16,400) in compensation after a doctor mistakenly cut off part of a baby's index finger during a Caeserean section in early January in Qingzhou city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a local newspaper reported today.
A photo posted online shows the baby boy has a shorter index finger on his right hand after the obstetrician cut off the finger until the first joint.
The hospital also covered all medical expenses from the delivery, said the report.
The 22-year-old mother was urgently transferred to receive a C-section on January 4 since the baby could not be born naturally because of the size of its head, said the report.
After three hours’ operation, the mother surnamed Fu delivered a boy weighing 3.8 kilograms, but with a bleeding index finger, said the report.
The mother was told the injury was not a big deal. She said she could not imagine that the baby’s finger would have been cut during delivery, but the injury and its cause were announced two days later after a surgeon’s diagnosis.
The family said they were having trouble accepting the fact that the boy, who was born healthy, unexpectedly lost a finger tip, the baby’s father said.
It casts a shadow over the boy’s life, said the father, who reported the case to the local health bureau last Wednesday. The family had demanded compensation of 500,000 yuan, the report said.
The doctor who helped to deliver the baby has 20 years of clinical experience, and the case was an accident, said an official of the hospital surnamed Gong.
The whereabouts of the missing part of the baby’s finger are unknown, though X-rays showed it was not left in the mother’s body.
The baby was discharged from the hospital yesterday, and the scar on his index finger is expected to heal gradually, the report said.
