Toddler killer will appeal death sentence

A man sentenced to death for killing a two-year-old girl during an argument with her mother over a parking space has decided to appeal.

The lawyer for Han Lei was expected to submit the written appeal to the court this afternoon as they hoped to clarify the facts, Legal Evening News reported today.

Beijing No.1 Intermediate People’s Court found the 39-year-old guilty of homicide on September 25. The court said he pulled the toddler from the stroller and threw her to the ground in the city’s Daxing District on July 23.

Han insisted during the trial, which was held on September 16, that he thought the stroller was just a shopping cart. He didn’t know there was a baby inside and he didn’t realize he was throwing a baby, he told the court.

His lawyer said Han was eager to offer the girl’s family compensation. The family had originally asked for 2.73 million yuan (US$446,082), but their lawyer withdrew the claim before the verdict was announced, according to the report.
