Toddler saved from wheels in Foshan
The tragedy of 2-year-old Yue Yue, who got no help from 18 passers-by after she was run over twice by vans, didn't repeat on Wednesday when another toddler was hit by a car in the same city of Foshan, Guangdong Province.
More than 10 people responded promptly to save the one-year-old and stopped the car in time to avoid crushing the boy, the Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Due to their timely intervention, the boy only suffered a fractured thigh and he would recover within one month, the paper said.
It noted the sharp contrast in people's reaction from what happened to Yue Yue a week ago. The girl died early this morning of massive injuries.
The boy, Xiao Jie, was also wandering alone in a marketplace on Wednesday morning when he was hit by a car. Witnesses shouted at the driver who didn't know the boy was lying inches away from his front wheel.
"I was walking and chatting with my friend when I saw the accident," one witness told the newspaper. "I dashed forth and shouted at the driver."
The driver surnamed Huang got out of the car and began to help the boy. Meanwhile, more than 10 passers-by helped by calling police and finding the boy's parents. When Huang offered to send the boy and her mother to the hospital, the passers-by reminded the mother to protect the scene for traffic police.
Huang stayed at the spot waiting for police to come while his wife accompanied the wounded boy and her mother to the hospital.
However, the incident also raised public concerns about some parents' inability to look after their children. Some people criticized the couple for not keeping their toddler in sight.
