Toddler saved in 10th floor fall recovering well in hospital
THE toddler who was saved in a fall from her 10th floor apartment is recovering well. Her eyesight has returned to normal and her fractures have healed, the doctors said.
The two-year-old Zhang Fangyu, better known as Niu Niu, fell off her apartment window in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on July 2. She was caught by a young mother whose outstretched arms cushioned her fall and saved her life.
The young girl was sent to the No. 2 Hospital of Zhejiang University's School of Medicine to treat her hemiplegia and fractures. She has been making good progress in the hospital and can now move her left limbs. Her six fractures have all but healed this week, the doctors said.
Yesterday, an eye test showed Niu Niu's vision has improved to the normal level of a two-year-old, a sign that her brain injury has disappeared. But her left leg still felt weak. "Her left fingers can bend but cannot stretch and her left feet can kick down but cannot kick up," said Zhang Jianmin, the chief physician of the hospital's neurosurgery department.
Though Niu Niu cannot stand or walk yet, she can crawl and roll over on the floor and can sit with a helping hand, Zhang said. To encourage Niu Niu to use her hands, doctors and Niu Niu's parents urge her to pick up glass beads and reward her with candies.
"Now she is as healthy as a normal kid except the impaired nerves of her left limbs," Dr Zhang said. "It is a miracle for a girl falling from the 10th floor to recover so fast."
Wu Juping, the 31-year-old woman who saved Niu Niu and suffered fractures to her left arm, is also recovering in the hospital and is expected to be discharged later this month.
