Toll and tax evaders face jail terms

PEOPLE who use fake military car plates or documents to evade tax and highway tolls face a maximum three-year jail term, according to China's supreme court and procuratorate.

A notice detailing the punishment for those who forge, steal, sell or buy military uniforms, seals, ID cards, license plates or other documents was issued by the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate this week and will come into effect from August 1, according to the Beijing Times.

People who fabricate, change, sell, buy or steal military documents and seals could be jailed for up to three years, but serious offences could involve sentences ranging from three to 10 years.

Sun Jun, spokesman for the Supreme People's Court, told the newspaper an estimated 1 billion yuan (US$155 million) of toll fees are evaded annually by people using fake military license plates. Sun said these offences severely tarnish the image of soldiers, cause serious social consequences and are risks to safety.
