Top Japanese minister in China talks over ties
A JAPANESE vice foreign minister has paid a two-day visit to China in an effort to ease strains between Asia’s two biggest economies over a bitter territorial dispute.
Hawkish Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who cemented his grip on power in the upper house last week, has been signaling a desire for dialogue with China since his victory. Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki’s visit was Tokyo’s latest effort to improve ties soured over the Diaoyu Islands row.
Saiki met China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and a deputy in Beijing, China’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“Both sides had a candid exchange of view on Sino-Japanese relations. China clearly expressed its position on problems facing relations between the two countries,” the statement said.
