Top cop faces corruption trial in home city
THE former top cop in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality will face trial next Tuesday in a hearing expected to last four to five days, head of the city's Higher People's Court said.
Wen Qiang, former head of the Municipal Justice Bureau, faces charges of rape, bribery, and protecting gangs and organized crime, the city's top judge Qian Feng told Xinhua news agency today.
The 54-year-old Chongqing native will be tried in No.5 Intermediate People's Court, where his sister-in-law Xie Caiping, known as "the godmother" of Chongqing's underworld, received 20 years' jail.
Qian said the trial will not be held in another city, contrary to earlier media reports, and reporters will be invited to see a fair and just trial.
Wen's wife Zhou Xiaoya will stand trial with her husband for taking bribes with him. She also helped police uncover 20 million yuan (US$2.92 million) of bribes her husband hid under the mud of a fish pond after police showed her a video of him visiting underaged prostitutes.
Three subordinate police officers named Huang Daiqiang, Zhao Liming, and Chen Tao will also stand trial.
