Top cop held over rival's slaying

A FORMER commissar has been detained for harboring the suspected killer of a deputy police chief in northeast China, following rumors that the commissar hired the hitman to end internal strife in the police department.

Chen Jing, the former commissar of the police department in Tongjiang City, Heilongjiang Province, has been detained for trying to cover up for Liu Xiangjun, who allegedly shot dead the city's deputy police chief Sun Wei on March 28, Tongjiang police told a press conference late yesterday.

After being arrested on March 31, Liu claimed that his good relationship with Chen meant he would look after him, according to police.

The Beijing Times quoted an unnamed officer saying Chen resented Sun because he was sacked in February after Sun reported Chen's gambling habit to higher authorities. He added that the internal strife between Chen and Sun dated back to 2006 when the two first started to work together in Tongjiang Public Security Bureau.

Police found drugs stashed in Chen's house before he was detained.
