Top cop investigated over wedding

POLICE are investigating a top officer after he invited 1,110 guests to his daughter's wedding feast that cost about 600,000 yuan (US$88,000) in Shenzhen City, in south China's Guangdong Province.

The average urban per capita income in the city last year was US$2,320.

The city's public security bureau will announce the results of its probe as soon as possible after public outcry about corruption, spokesperson Zhou Baojun told yesterday's Guangzhou Daily.

Liu Shengqiang, vice director of the police's airport branch, told the newspaper that he had so many friends, colleagues and family members that he was obliged to arrange such a large celebration.

The governor of Guanlong Village, also surnamed Liu, described the dishes at the banquet as "just so-so" and said villagers had offered around 100 yuan, just as at other village weddings.
