Top education official resigns over misuse of funds
A SENIOR educational official resigned after he was found to misuse state funds for personal travel, China’s top Party disciplinary watchdog said yesterday.
Yuan Zhenguo, former president of China Academy of Education Science, was put under a media spotlight after an online whistleblower claimed he found documents with flight information and a travel itinerary in Beijing early this month, the Beijing News reported.
In December 2011, Yuan was accused of spending no more than 10 hours on official duties during an eight-day official tour to Brazil and Argentina. Yuan, accompanied by his wife, a university teacher, was accused of spending most of his time enjoying exotic landscapes and gambling, according to the whistleblower’s post.
Yuan denied the accusations, saying the schedule was just a draft. Yuan said he, rather than the academy, covered personal expenses.
At a meeting yesterday, the Central Commission for Party Discipline Inspection approved his resignation, which were confirmed to be related to violations during official tours, the Beijing News reported. No other details were disclosed.
