Top envoy in Syria for talks on crisis
China disapproves of armed intervention or forcing a regime change in Syria, Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun said yesterday ahead of an official trip to Syria as it steps up efforts to mediate in the Syrian crisis.
China and Russia this month blocked a draft UN Security Council resolution backing an Arab plan urging President Bashar al-Assad to give up power after 11 months of bloodshed.
China said it was simply trying to prevent more violence and was acting in accordance with the UN charter.
"China does not approve of the use of force to interfere in Syria or the forceful pushing of a so-called regime change," Zhai said.
Zhai, who will be in Syria today and tomorrow, said China believed sanctions or the threat of sanctions were not conducive to the resolution of the issue.
The Foreign Ministry did not give details of Zhai's agenda or who he would meet. Last week, he met a Syrian opposition delegation in Beijing.
The trip comes days after China said Western powers should tread carefully at the UN in dealing with Syria, or risk worsening violence.
"We urge the Syrian government and all of its political parties to immediately and fully end all acts of violence and quickly restore stability and normal social order," Zhai said.
