Top official in Jiangxi sacked for corruption
THE deputy governor of east China’s Jiangxi Province has been removed from his position for serious disciplinary violation, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Yao Mugen, 57, is under investigation for owning dozens of properties and having bank deposits of millions of yuan.
His downfall is reportedly linked to his job at the province’s development and reform commission where he was in charge of approving projects for 16 years.
His wife Yi Anping has also been taken in but it was unclear if she was also being probed or simply assisting in the investigation.
Yao is the 23rd provincial and ministerial-level official — and the second from Jiangxi Province — to be sacked for corruption charges since President Xi Jinping took office last year.
“Yao was very powerful and was involved in too many big projects and administrative approvals,” a retired official told the 21st Century Business Herald.
Central discipline authorities said Yao has been under investigation since March 22 and was taken away while attending a meeting in Shandong Province.
Yao also looked after the departments of agriculture, forestry, water conservation and land resources.
Among others properties, Yao allegedly did not mention a villa he owned in Shanghai when officials were asked to declare their assets.
