Top prosecutors take over Xie's case

CHINA'S top prosecutors have stepped in to take over the investigation of Xie Yalong, former vice chairman of the Chinese Football Association.

The news has aroused suspicion that Xie's case may be more serious than that of Nan Yong and Yang Yimin, the other two officials at bureau-director level to be detained in the investigation into the CFA corruption scandal.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate usually only gets involved when a case is particularly serious or deals with national secrets.

Xie and the other two CFA officials are alleged to have collaborated with other senior officials in accepting bribes to fix matches and place players on or off the payroll of the national team.

During Xie's tenure, more than 150 football players have been playing for the national team, almost half the total number of footballers in the Chinese Super League.

It was widely accepted that a player could pay 100,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan for a chance to play for the national team. Some coaches also paid to coach the national team, but the amounts have not been disclosed.

From 2005 to 2007, a total of 106 players had played for the national team coached by Zhu Guanghu.
