Torture suspected in official's death in custody

THE body of an official who died in detention on corruption charges has been incinerated but an investigation into the cause his death is continuing.

A funeral was held yesterday for Ran Jianxin, a low-ranking official in Lichuan City, Hubei Province, whose death in custody led to a rally of nearly 1,500 people in front of the city hall, demanding an official explanation, China News Service reported today.

Ran, 49, was questioned by local disciplinary authorities on June 4 on bribery charges. Officials involved claimed that Ran suddenly fell on the ground and died in hospital later. But many locals didn't buy it and moaned him for defending them against land grabs and demolition by the government.

An autopsy showed that Ran died of respiratory system failure, indicating torture might be involved. A Lichuan Party secretary and two disciplinary officials in Enshi Prefecture have been suspended and are probed for their involvement in Ran's death.
