Tot found with dead grandma is critical
A two-year-old girl in central China was found barely breathing and lying in the arms of her dead 45-year-old grandmother with maggots crawling all over her body after the grandmother died about seven days ago.
The girl, identified as Xiao Meng, was found by her parents on Tuesday lying in the bathroom next to her grandmother Wang Lichun, whose body had started to decompose.
Xiao Meng stayed with her grandmother in their hometown in the city of Loudi, Hunan Province, while her parents and the grandfather worked in Changsha, the provincial capital, the Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported yesterday.
The tap water was running when the parents barged into the room, and Xiao Meng's feet were swollen as they were submerged in the water for several days.
The parents came back to their hometown after they had lost contact with Wang since September 20. Phone calls went unanswered.
They now think that Wang passed away on that day and their daughter starved for seven days until they found her.
The girl is in critical condition from a serious infection she caught because of her prolonged exposure to the corpse, Xiao Tao, a doctor with Xiangya No. 2 Hospital, told the newspaper.
Besides medical treatment, the girl is going to need psychological help as she suffered from extreme shock and often startled from sleep screaming, the doctor said.
The closet where food was stored was tightly closed when the parents found the girl, which meant she couldn't get to the food even if she knew where it was, her mother told the newspaper.
The woman did not have any known health problems, and the cause of her death was unclear, authorities said.
