Tough penalty likely for Palace Museum thief

THE thief who stole art pieces from Beijing's Palace Museum last May could face life imprisonment, according to prosecutors.

Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court has taken up the case in which Shi Baikui, a 27-year-old villager from east China's Shandong Province, stole nine jewelry caskets from the museum, the Procuratorial Daily reported today.

Shi threw away five of the caskets while on the run and ditched the rest after a jewelry shop owner told him they were fake and refused to buy them, the paper said.

Six of the stolen exhibits have been recovered but the rest are still missing. The claimed value of the nine exhibits was 410,000 yuan and that for the three missing pieces was 150,000 yuan, the paper said.

Shi was also found to have stolen a laptop, cellphone and 500 yuan from a company office and a restaurant in December 2010 and May 2011.
