Tourist bus in bridge collapse
ONE person was killed and 22 others were injured after a bridge collapsed in east Fujian Province yesterday while a tourist bus was crossing.
The accident happened at around 8:50am when a section of the Wuyishan Gongguan Bridge collapsed in the city of Wuyishan, Xinhua news agency reported.
The bus, with 23 people on board, crashed to the ground as the bridge collapsed, a city spokesman said.
The injured received medical attention at the scene before being rushed to Wuyishan Metropolitan Hospital.
Of the 23 people onboard, 21 were tourists from Fuyang City in Anhui Province. The driver was killed at the scene while the guide was among those seriously injured.
Zou Zhongjie told China National Radio of his terror as he felt the rear of the bus suddenly drop and then heard a loud sound from the front of the vehicle before the bus crashed. "Most of my colleagues were moaning in pain, but I could do nothing to help them as both my legs were broken," Zou said.
The tour guide lost consciousness initially but then called the police.
The steel arch bridge, designed by the Fujian Provincial Traffic Planning and Designing Institute, is a vital link between the Wuyishan Mountain Resort and the 101 Provincial Highway. It opened in 1999.
