Tourists beaten in Hunan

POLICE in central Hunan Province are searching for 30 suspects who assaulted 19 tourists in Fenghuang City over a traffic dispute.

As police investigate the case, some victims have claimed one suspect threatened them with a gun, Chongqing Economic Times reported yesterday.

The group from Chongqing, including a four-year-old boy, were heading back to their hometown after visiting Fenghuang on Wednesday. They were traveling in several cars, one of which almost hit a minibus while overtaking it.

Even though they stopped and got out of their car to apologize, the minibus driver and conductor kept rebuking them, reported the newspaper, citing one of the tourists, Zhan Jing.

The altercation escalated with people on both sides damaging the other's vehicle, according to the newspaper.

After the tourists left and were having lunch in a village, about 30 men encircled them and started to beat them with sticks, Zhan told the newspaper.

During the fight, a man in his 40s suddenly pulled out a gun and threatened two Chongqing tourists who tried to save a friend, he added,

The fight lasted about an hour until police arrived and an officer fired a shot into the air, the newspaper said.

The suspects fled the scene while the injured tourists were being treated in a Chongqing hospital, the report said.

According to the police, the suspects are all minibus drivers in the area.
