Tourists left 47 tons of garbage at Tian'anmen

SANITATION workers in Beijing cleared 47 tons of garbage from Tian'anmen Square during the recent eight-day national holidays, officials said yesterday. The figure was up 24.8 percent from the same period last year, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment.

The commission has increased its manpower to ensure cleanliness in the square during the holidays.

Patrols of expressways around the capital at the end of the holiday also were increased amid an expected traffic boom.

Mounds of garbage discarded by travelers at scenic spots and along expressways have triggered discussion online. A photo posted just after the holiday showed vast quantities of garbage on a beach in southern China's coastal city of Sanya, one of the country's most popular tourist sites. About 50 tons of garbage were left on the 3-kilometer beach after a moon-watching celebration on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival on September 30.
