Tower crane fall caused by broken power arm in Guangdong

A TOWER crane fall that has killed three and seriously injured five others in south China's Guangdong Province on Friday was caused by a broken arm of the machine, according to local authorities.

The city authorities involved in the investigation said today the balance arm of the tower crane at the construction site of a skyscraper in Dongguan City plunged 212 meters from the 52nd floor and landed onto a basement floor after the power arm broke.

A crane operator was among the three killed. The other two were workers working on the first floor in the basement.

The accident happened at about 4:10 pm Friday at the Taishang Building, which is to become the "NO.1 Skyscraper in Dongguan" with an expected height of 289 meters. It will have 68 floors on the ground and four stories in the basement.

The building is funded by Taiwan businessmen.
