Town leader sacked over detention order
A CENTRAL China town's leader has been fired after ordering the detention of a villager who picked up his cup of water to drink.
Jiang Youjun, director of Chengjiao Town in Suixian County of Henan Province's Shangqiu City, was "too rude" in dealing with the dispute and went beyond his duty to order the detention, the county government told yesterday's Beijing News.
Villager Wei Kexing, 65, approached Jiang for land compensation last Monday. He was thirsty and took up Jiang's cup of water on the desk and intended to drink it, but was interrupted by Jiang. A verbal dispute broke out and a fight followed.
Jiang then called police and ordered them to detain Wei for seven days.
Media outlets reported the incident and caused a fierce public outcry.
The county government investigated and decided to remove Jiang from his position.
It also ordered the county's public security bureau to remove Zhang Yuhui from his post as director of Jiaocheng Town's Police Office.
The detention order on Wei was lifted and he was released.
Jiang has visited Wei's wife to express his apologies, according to the county government.
Wei had been lodging complaints to Jiang for three years over compensation for his land occupied by the village government.
The government had promised to pay 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) for the parcel of land "but did not pay a penny," villagers said.
