Townsfolk panic over drinking water
MORE than 10,000 residents in a south China town in Guangdong Province were told to stop drinking tap water as it contains manganese 12 times higher than considered safe.
A villager in Da'an Township surnamed Wang said this problem never happened before. The bucket he uses to store tap water has been blacked by residues, the local Nanfang Daily reported today.
An official from the local water factory showed a water test result on Monday, indicating the tap water contained 1.2 milligrams of manganese per liter, compared with the national safety level of 0.1 milligrams per liter.
Excessive intake of the black metal can harm people's central nervous system, cause tremor, and affect the brain.
Da'an Township authorities ordered the water factory to warn residents of the risk and it set off panic buying of bottled water in supermarkets.
