Township chief fired for bad-mouthing citizens

A TOWNSHIP official in north China’s Hebei Province who poured scorn at civilians during a lavish banquet has been removed from his position.

A video footage of the event was uploaded on the Internet on Friday night.

Liang Wenyong, Party chief of Guzishan Town, is seen enjoying high-priced lobsters, high-end cigarettes and premium distilled spirits at the banquet, costing tens of thousands of yuan.

“With bowls of rice in hand and meat in their mouths, they (citizens) still abuse you with dirty words,” Liang was videotaped as saying while enjoying the expensive meal.

“Citizens now show only such disgusting and shameful manners. We can’t show respect to them because they have no sense of shame,” he said.

Others at the table even agreed with him, the clips showed.

Amid public outcry over the comments, the government of Xinglong County investigated the video and confirmed its authenticity, China News Service reported.

The video was shot at a famous chain restaurant on May 20, when Zhang Taiming, director of the Banbishan County Taxation Bureau, was holding a private banquet.

Both Liang and Zhang were dismissed from their positions, the Chengde City publicity department said.

Since Liang was the only one who is clearly seen in the video while others were blurred out, there is growing speculation that he was being targeted.
