Toxic chemicals found in section of Hejiang River

AUTHORITIES in Fengkai County, Guangdong Province, yesterday warned residents not to use water from a section of the Hejiang River because it had been tainted by dangerous chemicals.

An initial investigation found the toxic chemicals thallium and cadmium in the water, the county's publicity department said in a statement.

Dead fish were found in a section of the river in the county yesterday after hazardous substances was detected upstream in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the statement said.

A water sample contained a thallium density of 0.00022 milligrams per liter, or 1.2 times the allowed maximum level. The density of cadmium was 0.0034 milligrams per liter, a level that makes the water second degree.

The Fengkai government warned residents against drinking tap water or eating aquatic products from the Hejiang River, a main tributary of the Xijiang River.

The Xijiang is a trunk of the Pearl River, which is a major water source for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

An investigation has begun to determine the source of the pollutants.
