Unknown poisonous gas has sickened 19 residents, including seven children, in the central China city of Wuhan after a cylinder rolled off a truck and leaked pungent gas to a nearby complex.

Altogether 19 people were hospitalized after inhaling the poisonous gas in late night of Sunday. A victim, Li Dezhen, said the sudden pungent smell literally knocked her out. Another victim surnamed Guo said his whole family was tearing at the smell.

The mishap took place near a junior high school. Luckly it was empty at night, the local Changjiang Daily reported today.

Fight fighters were called to the scene and they said the cylinder was leaking poisonous gas. But they did not say what the gas was. The accident was caused by the driver, who fled the scene afterwards, said the firefighters.

More than 30 residents were evacuated. They were vomiting after breathing in the gas. Six of them were unconscious. All of them were revived after treatment.
Nine of the victims remain in hospital for treatment and observation.
